Geoffrey of Monmouth was a very important writer from the Middle Ages. He was born in Wales between the years 1090 and 1100. Many people wonder where he came from. Some think he was Welsh, while others think he was Breton or Norman. He lived a long time ago and spent much of his life away from Wales. He even became a bishop at St Asaph in 1152. He likely died sometime between late 1154 and late 1155.

Geoffrey is most famous for writing a book called *The History of the Kings of Britain*. He wrote this big story in Latin. Latin was the special language used for learning in Europe back then. His book tells a huge story about the kings of Britain. It starts with a man named Brutus of Troy. It follows many leaders until the year 600. This book is why we know so much about the legends of King Arthur today.

How did Geoffrey write such a famous book? He did not just make everything up from nothing. He gathered many different things to use. He looked at old king lists and oral tales. He also used poems and other history books. He took these pieces and smoothed them out. He wanted to create one grand story that flowed well. This helped his stories spread very quickly across Europe.

Even though his book was popular, it was not always seen as true. Some people in his own time were skeptical. A writer named William of Newburgh said the stories were made up. Another writer, Gerald of Wales, even told a story about demons. He said they liked Geoffrey's book more than the Bible! Today, historians say the book is not a reliable history. They call it a literary forgery because it mixes facts with imagination.

Geoffrey also wrote other interesting things. He wrote about Merlin, the famous prophet. One work was called the *Prophecies of Merlin*. It was full of strange sayings about the future. He also wrote a poem called the *Life of Merlin*. In that story, Merlin is an old man living in the woods. These stories helped make the character of Merlin very famous. Geoffrey's work changed how people thought about legends forever.
