Geoffrey of Monmouth was a writer from Wales. He lived a long time ago. He was born near the year 1100.

Geoffrey is famous for his book about kings. It is called *The History of the Kings of Britain*. He wrote it in Latin. This was the main language for learning back then. His book told stories about many kings. It also told stories about King Arthur.

Many people in the middle ages read his work. They thought his stories were true history. But most of the stories were made up. Geoffrey used his own imagination to make them grand. He used old tales and poems to help him.

He also wrote about Merlin. Merlin was a man who could see the future. Geoffrey wrote about Merlin in two different ways. One book was full of strange prophecies. Another book showed Merlin as an old man in the woods.

Today, we know his history books are not facts. They are still very important, though. He helped make the legend of King Arthur famous all over the world.
