He was a French-speaking author from a place called Valenciennes. This town was in the County of Hainaut. It sat near the edge of the Holy Roman Empire. Froissart wrote many different things. He wrote long stories called romances. He also wrote many poems. Some of his poems were short. Others were long stories told in verse. His most important work was called the Chronicles. This work is very famous today. It tells the history of the 14th-century kingdoms. These kingdoms were England, France, and Scotland.

Froissart worked very hard to find good stories. He did not just sit at home to write. Instead, he traveled to many different lands. He went to England, Scotland, and Wales. He also visited France, Flanders, and Spain. He wanted to talk to people directly. He gathered first-hand accounts for his Chronicles. This helped him tell a true story of the past. One big trip was to Milan. He went there with Lionel, the Duke of Clarence. They went to see a royal wedding. The wedding was for the duke and Violante. She was the daughter of Galeazzo Visconti.

We do not know everything about Froissart's life. Some people thought his poems were his own life stories. However, many scholars now think this is not true. They say the "I" in his poems is just a character. He lived during a time of great change. Around the year 1361 or 1362, he was about 24 years old. At that time, he began serving Queen Philippa. She was the queen of King Edward III of England. He stayed with her until she died in 1369. Some think he was a poet for her court. Others think he just received gifts from her.

Many wealthy people helped Froissart with his work. This help is called patronage. After Queen Philippa died, Joanna, the Duchess of Brabant, helped him. These rich leaders gave him rewards. He received a village called Estinnes near Binche. He also received a position in Chimay. These gifts gave him the money he needed. He used the money to travel more. More travel meant more stories for his books. While in Milan, he met other famous writers. These were Chaucer and Petrarch. He also wrote about early technology. He was one of the first to mention clock parts. These parts were called the verge and foliot.

Today, we still value Froissart's writing very much. His Chronicles are a main source for history. They help us learn about the Hundred Years' War. Many beautiful books were made to show his work. These are called illuminated manuscripts. They have tiny, colorful paintings called miniatures. One very fancy set was made in the 1470s. A nobleman named Louis de Gruuthuse asked for it. It had 112 paintings by famous artists. One artist was named Loiset Lyédet. Even a composer named Edward Elgar was inspired by him. He wrote a piece of music called an overture named Froissart.
