He was born at a place called Sycharth in the northeastern part of Wales. Owain was not just a soldier, but also a highly educated lawyer. His family history was very special to the Welsh people. He could trace his family tree back to three major Welsh dynasties. This made him a unique figure in his time. Many people saw him as a natural leader for the nation.

His life changed when a disagreement with a neighbor turned into a revolt. In 1400, Owain had a dispute with an English Lord named Baron Grey of Ruthin. This argument grew into a large war for independence. Owain wanted to end English rule in Wales once and for all. He proclaimed himself the Prince of Wales in front of his family and friends.

To fight the English, he used clever guerrilla warfare tactics. This meant he used the hills and mountains to surprise his enemies. He led his followers through many difficult battles over fifteen years.

Owain had many successes during the early years of his rebellion. In 1401, his men even took control of Conwy Castle. He also won a major victory at a place called Pilleth in 1402. By 1404, Owain held control over most of Wales. During this time, he held a special meeting called a parliament in Machynlleth.

He even had representatives from all over Wales present. He also met with people sent from France to discuss his cause.

Owain had big plans for the future of his country. In a document called the Pennal Letter of 1406, he shared his ideas. He wanted to build two new universities for Welsh students. One would be in North Wales and one in South Wales. He also wanted to create an independent Welsh church. He hoped to make the church strong by bringing back the archbishopric of St Davids. These plans showed he wanted Wales to be a place of learning and faith.

Eventually, the English military began to win back many lands. By 1409, the English had captured the castles at Harlech and Aberystwyth.

Owain had to retreat into the mountains to stay safe. He was never captured by the English, even though they offered rewards for him. He disappeared from history around the year 1415. Today, he is remembered as a folk hero in Welsh culture. He is often mentioned alongside famous figures like King Arthur.
