He served as the 104th Archbishop of Canterbury from 2002 to 2012. This is a very important role in the church. He was the first leader in modern times chosen from outside the Church of England. Before this, he was the Bishop of Monmouth. He was also the Archbishop of Wales. His job was to help keep many different groups together.

His leadership was a very busy time for the church. Many people had disagreements about new ideas. Some people argued about women becoming bishops. Others had different views about gay priests. Williams worked hard to keep everyone talking to each other. He did not want the church to split into different parts. He even tried to pass a new rule called the Anglican Covenant. However, most of the church groups did not accept his plan.
