Archaeology is the study of old things like tools or buildings. Renfrew also studied languages and how the human mind worked. He wanted to understand how people lived thousands of years ago. His work helped change how we see ancient history. He was a very important leader in his field.

Renfrew used many different tools to solve old mysteries. He used a method called radiocarbon dating to find ages. This helps scientists know how old an object truly is. He also studied archaeogenetics to look at ancient DNA. He even helped create the field of neuroarchaeology. This is a way to study how ancient people thought. He wanted to see how the mind changed over time. These tools helped him piece together the story of humanity.

His journey into science began many years ago. He was born on July 25, 1937. He went to St Albans School in Hertfordshire. From 1956 to 1958, he served in the Royal Air Force. Later, he studied at St John's College in Cambridge. He graduated in 1962 after studying many different sciences. He earned his PhD in 1965 by studying ancient cultures. He married Jane M. Ewbank in that same year.

Renfrew worked at many famous universities during his career. He was a lecturer at the University of Sheffield. In 1972, he became a professor at the University of Southampton. He later held the Disney Professorship at the University of Cambridge. He also started the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research in 1990. He led many digs in Greece at places like Sitagroi. He also worked on the islands of Milos and Keros. These places helped him learn about the Mediterranean world.

One of his biggest ideas was the Anatolian hypothesis. He believed a group called the Proto-Indo-Europeans lived in Anatolia. He thought they lived there 9,000 years ago. This group then moved into Europe as farming spread. This idea was different from other theories about language. Renfrew also worked hard to stop people from looting sites. Looting is when people steal old items from the ground. He wanted to protect history for everyone to see. He passed away on November 24, 2024, at age 87.
