William Neill was a very talented poet from Scotland. He was a major voice in the Scottish Renaissance. This was a movement to grow Scottish culture. He loved many different languages. He wrote poems in English and Scots. He also wrote in Irish and Scottish Gaelic.

His work helped keep these special languages alive for others to enjoy.

William had a very busy life of learning. He was born in Prestwick, Ayrshire, in 1922. He went to school at Ayr Academy. Later, he served in the RAF. He then went to the University of Edinburgh. There, he earned an Honours degree in Celtic studies. This means he studied languages like Gaelic.

He used this knowledge to write his many poems.

Many people gave William prizes for his beautiful writing. In 1969, he won a bardic crown in Aviemore. This is a special award for Gaelic poetry. He also won the Grierson Verse Prize in 1970. The Sloan Prize was another award he received in 1970. In 1985, he won a Scottish Arts Council Book Award.

These prizes showed how much people valued his skill.
