He was a "makar," which is an old word for a poet. Kennedy belonged to the Clan Kennedy, a very important family in South Ayrshire. He grew up in an area where many people spoke Gaelic. This was part of the Galloway Gàidhealtachd, a region where Gaelic was a strong language. Because of his family, he was well-connected to the royal court. People in his time respected him as a master of many different kinds of writing.

Kennedy worked hard on his education to become a skilled writer. He studied at the University of Glasgow for many years. He graduated in 1476 and earned his MA in 1478. Later in life, he held important jobs in the church. He was the rector of Douglas and a canon at Glasgow Cathedral. He also lived on estates in the areas of Carrick and Galloway. These roles helped him stay close to important leaders in Scotland. His life was filled with many different duties and responsibilities.

History tells us that Kennedy was a very talented writer. He lived during the time of King James IV. One of his most famous poems is called "The Passioun." This long poem tells the story of Christ from his birth to his ascension. It is a very different style from his other famous work. He also took part in a poetic contest called a "flyting." In this contest, a poet named William Dunbar used insults against him. Dunbar even teased Kennedy about his Carrick roots and his Gaelic ways.

Kennedy's influence can still be felt by poets today. A modern poet named William Neill wrote about him in the 20th century. Neill was interested in Kennedy's Gaelic roots and his home in South Ayrshire. He even wrote a poem in Gaelic called "Chuma Bhaltair Cinneide." This poem was written to remember the great poet.
