He lived from the year 521 until 597 AD. Many people remember him for spreading Christianity in the lands that are now Scotland. He was a very important monk and a priest. He is even called one of the Twelve Apostles of Ireland. His name, Colmcille, actually means "dove" in the Irish language. This name is the same as the name for the Prophet Jonah.

Columba spent many years as a student to learn everything he could. He studied at several schools like Movilla and the monastery of Clonard. At Clonard, he learned about Latin and religious ideas. There were about 300 scholars studying there at that time. He learned from famous teachers like Finnian of Clonard. These studies helped him become a very wise man. He eventually became a monk and was ordained as a priest. He also started many important monasteries in Ireland.

His life changed when he decided to leave his home in Ireland. Some stories say he left because of a disagreement over a holy book. Others say he left to make up for a difficult political event. This journey was sometimes called a pilgrimage. In the year 563 AD, he traveled to Scotland with twelve companions. They traveled in a small boat called a wicker currach. They landed near Kintyre and then moved to the island of Iona.

On the island of Iona, Columba built a large abbey. This abbey became a very powerful center for religion and politics. He worked hard as a missionary to reach the Pictish kingdoms. Some stories say he performed miracles during this time. One famous story says he met a water beast in the River Ness. This beast is sometimes thought to be like the Loch Ness Monster. He also met with King Bridei of Fortriu to show respect. Columba spent most of his later life working in Scotland.

Today, many people still honor the work of Columba. In Ireland, he is one of three patron saints. The city of Derry is named after him in the Irish language. Many schools, parks, and even an airplane are named in his honor. In Scotland, some families claim they are related to his followers. He is remembered as a great man of letters too. It is said he helped write or copy about 300 books. His legacy lives on through the many places he helped build.
