Columba was a prominent Irish abbot and missionary evangelist. He lived from December 7, 521, until June 9, 597 AD. He is credited with spreading Christianity into modern-day Scotland. This work began during the Hiberno-Scottish mission. He founded a major abbey on the island of Iona. This abbey became a powerful religious and political center for centuries.

Columba's early life was spent in Ireland. He was born to Fedlimid and Eithne in Gartan. This area is in the district of Tír Chonaill. Some traditions say he was born on a flagstone called Leac na Cumha. His family claimed descent from Niall of the Nine Hostages. This was a pseudo-historical high king from the 5th century. His name in Irish means "dove." This is the same name as the Prophet Jonah.

He pursued a deep education in several monastic schools. First, he studied at Movilla under Finnian of Movilla. Later, he studied at Clonard Abbey on the River Boyne. Clonard was a major center for learning in the sixth century. It is said that about 300 scholars studied there at once. Columba was one of twelve students known as the Twelve Apostles of Ireland. He studied Latin and Christian theology during this time. He eventually became a monk and was ordained as a priest.

Several events led to his departure from Ireland. One tradition mentions a dispute with Finnian of Movilla. This conflict involved a psalter, which is a book of psalms. Some believe this led to the Battle of Cúl Dreimhne in 561. Another reason involves a political conflict involving Prince Curnan. Curnan was a kinsman of Columba who sought sanctuary. When his sanctuary was violated, Columba felt a sense of offense. On the advice of a hermit named Molaise, he chose to leave. This journey is often called a pilgrimage or an exile.

In 563 AD, Columba traveled to Scotland with twelve companions. They used a wicker currach covered with leather to cross the water. They landed near Dunaverty in Argyll. His kinsman, Conall mac Comgaill, gave him the island of Iona. Columba used Iona as a base to reach the Northern Pictish kingdoms. He acted as a diplomat among various tribes. He also worked to turn his monastery into a school for missionaries. He was a great man of letters who reportedly transcribed 300 books.

Many stories describe miracles performed by Columba. One famous legend involves an encounter with a water beast. This happened in 565 near the River Ness. The story says the beast had killed a Pict. Columba is said to have banished the creature to the depths. He also met with King Bridei of Fortriu. While the king did not convert, he showed Columba great respect. Columba remained a major figure in Scottish politics for many years.

Columba's legacy remains very strong in both nations. In Ireland, he is one of three patron saints. The city of Derry is named after him in Irish. Many schools, parks, and even an airplane carry his name. In Scotland, several clans claim connections to his followers. For example, Clan MacKinnon may belong to his kindred. His religious influence helped revitalize monasticism in the region. He is remembered as a scholar, a leader, and a missionary.
