His poems can feel both urban and pastoral. This means they describe city life and the countryside.

Fergusson followed a specific path to become a writer. He first studied at the University of St Andrews. There, he learned about logic and math. He even helped a professor organize lecture notes. Later, he worked as a copyist in Edinburgh. This was the same job his father had. He began by writing for a magazine called Walter Ruddiman's Weekly Review. In 1772, he published his first Scots poem called "The Daft Days." He eventually published a book of his collected works in 1773.

His life was full of social connections and clubs. He was a member of the Cape Club. This group met at a tavern in Craig's Close. Members had to use special names at every meeting. Fergusson was given the title "Sir Precentor." This name was a nod to his fine singing voice. He spent much time with artists, actors, and musicians. He even helped an Italian singer by writing Scots songs for an opera. These songs were performed and published with the show.
