Because their identity is a mystery, scholars call them the Gawain Poet. Some people also use the name Pearl Poet. This person wrote some of the most famous poetry in Middle English. These poems include Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Pearl, Patience, and Cleanness. Most of these stories are found together in one special book. This book is known as the Cotton MS Nero A X manuscript. It is kept safely at the British Library today.

Writing these poems required a lot of skill and knowledge. The poet used a style called alliterative verse. This means they used repeating sounds to create a rhythm. The poems show that the writer was very well-educated. They knew many technical words used for hunting and horn signals. They also understood the life of people in royal courts. The poems often use stories from the past, like Arthurian legends. They also use many stories from the Bible to share deep meanings.

History tells us a little bit about when this person lived. The Gawain Poet was likely writing in the late 14th century. They lived at the same time as famous writers like Geoffrey Chaucer. This time was part of a period called the Alliterative Revival. The poet's language was a specific dialect from the English Midlands. This area includes parts of Cheshire, Shropshire, and Staffordshire. Because of this, many think the poet was a native of that region. Some believe the Green Chapel in the poem was inspired by caves at Wetton Mill.

Finding the poet's true name is a big job for researchers. Many different people have been suggested as the possible author. Some scholars thought a man named Huchoun might have written them. Others suggested the poet was part of the Massey family from Cheshire. One idea was that John Massey of Cotton was the writer. Another theory suggests a knight named Sir John Stanley might be the person. Some even think an ancestor of a man named Humphrey Newton wrote the poems. Even with all these guesses, no one is completely sure.

Learning about the Gawain Poet helps us understand how English changed. During this time, the English language was growing and changing quickly. The poet's work shows how people's ideas about identity were shifting too. Their poems connect old legends with the religious beliefs of their time. By studying these works, we see how much care went into medieval storytelling. Even without a name, the poet's voice remains strong and clear. Their beautiful words still make people wonder about the world they lived in.
