This poem is an allegory, which is a story that uses symbols to teach lessons. It uses religious themes to explain deep ideas to regular people. The poem uses a special style called alliterative verse. This means the writer uses repeating sounds to create a rhythm. It was a way to make complex ideas easier to feel and understand.

The poem mentions the Malvern Hills, so he may have lived there. Some records say he was the son of Stacy de Rokayle. A note in an old book says he died in Shipton-under-Wychwood. Langland's poem was likely written around the year 1377. The main character in the story says he has followed someone for forty-five winters. This tells us the writer was likely middle-aged when he finished. The poem shows he had very deep knowledge of the church. He might have been a student at the Woodhouse Friary. Some scholars think he lived as a traveling hermit. He might have traded his writing for food and a place to sleep.
