MacDiarmid was famous for a special way of writing. He called this "synthetic Scots." It was a literary version of the Scots language. He created it by mixing different local dialects together. This helped make the language useful for his poetry. He also used a "synthetic English" later in life. This version included many scientific and technical words. He wanted his writing to be very precise.
