He is most widely recognized for his service as the 104th Archbishop of Canterbury. He held this position from 2002 until his retirement on 31 December 2012. As Archbishop, he acted as a central figure for the Anglican Communion. This is a global family of churches. The Archbishop of Canterbury serves as a focus of unity among them. However, the role is described as "primus inter pares," which means "first among equals." This means the Archbishop does not have direct authority over all Anglican provinces outside the Church of England.

Williams's tenure was a period of significant tension and complex religious debate.

The Anglican Communion faced potential fragmentation over several contemporary issues. These disagreements primarily concerned the ordination of women as bishops and the role of gay priests. Williams worked to maintain dialogue between different factions to prevent a permanent split. He proposed a plan known as the Anglican Covenant to help manage these differences. However, a majority of dioceses rejected this proposal. He also made an unsuccessful attempt to secure a majority for a measure allowing women to be appointed as bishops in the Church of England. During a 2010 address to the General Synod, he warned that such infighting could lead to a "schism." A schism is a formal split within a religious body.

His appointment to the primacy was historically significant for the Church.

Williams was the first Archbishop of Canterbury in modern times not appointed from within the Church of England. Before becoming Archbishop, he served as the Bishop of Monmouth. He also held the position of Archbishop of Wales. His background as a bishop of the disestablished Church in Wales made his elevation a notable departure from tradition. His academic reputation helped him connect with many people. Many believed he could make Christian ideas credible to intelligent people who did not believe in religion. He was also a patron of Affirming Catholicism, which influenced how others viewed his leadership.

Williams has had a deep and distinguished academic career.
