He was a poet and a collector of old books. He loved the culture of Wales very much. He wanted to protect its old traditions.

To do this, Iolo made many things up. He wrote new poems and stories. He said they were very old. These were forgeries, which means they were not real.

He even made a new way to write. He called this the Coelbren y Beirdd, or the Bardic Alphabet. It used many special symbols in a wooden frame.

Iolo also started a group called the Gorsedd. This is a community of Welsh bards. The Gorsedd still meets today. His work had a big impact on Welsh life. Some people even call him a genius. A school in Cowbridge is named after him. People still study his work to find the truth. Even his fake stories are famous today.
