Martin Schleyer was a priest from Germany.

He had a very big idea. He wanted to make a new way to talk. He called this new language Volapük.

He got this idea from a talk with a man in his town. The man had a son in America. The man could not write letters to his son. The post office could not read his writing. Schleyer wanted to fix this problem. He wanted a language for all people.

Schleyer wrote a book about Volapük in 1880. Many people loved his work. New clubs for the language grew all over Europe. Schleyer was also an editor for a magazine. The magazine shared Catholic poetry.

Schleyer worked as a pastor for many years. He lived in many towns like Krumbach and Litzelstetten. He was very happy in Litzelstetten. In 1894, the Pope gave him a special title. He was a papal prelate. Schleyer died in the year 1912. A high school in Lauda is named after him today.
