One day in Paris, Valentin saw something sad. He saw people who could not see being treated unkindly. This made him want to help. He wanted to start a school for them.

In 1784, he met a young boy named François. François was his first student. Valentin made a new way to teach. He made letters that were raised. The boy could feel the letters with his fingers. This helped him learn to read and write.

Valentin started a school in 1785. It was called the Institute for Blind Youth. The school taught students to read. It also taught them jobs like spinning. The King of France even helped the school. Later, the school was taken over by the state.
