He was born in 1772. He lived a long time ago. In 1793, he joined a monastery. He became a librarian there in 1800. Later, he moved to Munich. He worked for the Royal Library. This library is now the Bavarian State Library.

Schrettinger is famous for his work with books. He is known as the founder of modern library science. This is the study of how to run libraries. He was the first person to use that term. He made a new way to sort books. He put them into groups by subject. He also made lists of authors. He even made a list of where books were kept on the shelves.

In 1819, he began a special kind of list. It is called a classified catalog. Modern librarians still use his ideas today. He wrote books to teach others about library work. He also kept journals and wrote his own life story. His papers are kept in a library in Munich.
