He was a German priest and a librarian. Many people call him the founder of modern library science. This is a special way of studying how to run libraries. He was the first person to ever use that specific name. His work helped people find information much more easily. He changed how we organize large collections of books.

Schrettinger created a smart way to sort library items.

He made a catalog of all the things in the library. He divided these items into different subjects and sub-subjects. He also used something called cross-referencing to help people. This meant he made an alphabetical list of authors. He also made a list showing where books were shelved. This helped people know exactly where to look for a book.

His life began in Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz.

He was born there on June 17, 1772. In 1793, he joined the Benedictine monastery in Weißenohe. He was ordained as a priest in 1795. By 1800, he was the librarian for that monastery. In 1802, he moved to the city of Munich. This move happened just before the monastery closed down.

Schrettinger worked for a very famous library in Munich.

This was the Royal Library, which is now the Bavarian State Library. He became a curator in 1806. Later, in 1823, he became an under-librarian. In 1839, he was also installed as a Canon at St. Kajetan. In 1819, he started a project called a classified catalog. This is also known as a Realkatalog. Even today, modern librarians sometimes look at his work.

He wrote down many things for others to learn.

He even wrote a handwritten autobiography about his own life. These papers are still kept at the Bavarian State Library. He died in Munich on April 12, 1851. His life shows how much care goes into managing knowledge.
