His story began in Nuremberg, Germany, on May 26, 1828. A teenage boy was found wandering the streets with two letters. The letters claimed he had lived alone in a dark cell since 1812. He said a man had taught him to read and write. This man also taught him how to walk and stand. The boy only knew a few words and often said he did not know things. He mostly repeated that he wanted to be a cavalryman like his father.

In 1831, a British nobleman named Lord Stanhope took charge of him. Stanhope spent a lot of money to find out where Hauser came from. He even took Hauser to Hungary to see if the boy would remember anything. Hauser did not recognize any buildings or monuments there. Because of this, Stanhope began to doubt if Hauser was telling the truth. Eventually, Hauser moved to Ansbach to live with a man named Johann Georg Meyer. He worked as a copyist in a law office during this time.
