May used a special way to write his adventures. He often wrote in the first person. This means the character in the story is the one telling it. He created famous characters like Winnetou, a wise Apache chief. Winnetou had a blood brother named Old Shatterhand. In other stories, a character named Kara Ben Nemsi traveled through the Sahara desert. Kara Ben Nemsi had a local guide named Hadschi Halef Omar. May did not actually visit all these places himself. He used maps, guidebooks, and studies to help his imagination.

His life started with many hard times. May was born in 1842 in Hohenstein-Ernstthal, Saxony. He grew up in a poor family of weavers.

As a young man, he had a difficult time with the law. He was jailed for stealing candles and for other crimes. He even spent four years in a workhouse at Osterstein Castle. While he was in jail, he became an administrator for the prison library. This gave him a chance to read many different books. This reading helped him learn how to be a great writer.

May became a successful writer after he was released from jail. In 1874, he published his first book called "The Rose from Ernstthal."

He worked as an editor for many years in Dresden. By 1892, his book "Collected Travel Accounts" brought him fame and money. He became so famous that readers wrote to him as if he were his characters. He even wore costumes for photos and gave speaking tours. He lived in a home called Villa Shatterhand in Alt-Radebeul. He died there on March 30, 1912.

Even though he wrote adventures, May also cared about big ideas. Later in life, he wrote about peace and being good. He wanted to show how people could move from evil to good. He even met Bertha von Suttner, who won a Nobel Prize, in Vienna. May's work connects to the way we read adventure stories today. His characters like Winnetou are still remembered by many people. He is buried in Radebeul East in a tomb that looks like a temple.
