He grew up with four siblings and loved being active. He and his brother Romer enjoyed playing baseball and fishing together. As a young boy, he loved reading adventure books and studying history. These early interests helped him become a great storyteller later in life.

Grey's personal life was often quite complicated and difficult. He married a woman named Dolly in 1905, who became his most important helper.

Dolly was very smart with business and handled all his money and contracts. She also helped him improve his writing by proofreading his work. Even though Grey struggled with dark moods and anger, Dolly supported his career for many years. They lived in a farmhouse in Lackawaxen, Pennsylvania, which is now a museum. They later moved to Altadena, California, in 1920.

To write his books, Grey often went on big adventures. He traveled to places like the Grand Canyon to hunt mountain lions.
