Leighton learned his craft through many steps and travels. He studied in London at University College School first. Then, he traveled to Europe to learn from great teachers. He studied under Eduard von Steinle and Giovanni Costa. At age 17, he even drew a portrait of the philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer. Later, he studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence. His life was full of many different roles and honors. He was born in Scarborough to a doctor and a mother named Augusta Susan. His family had wealth from his grandfather, who served Russian tsars.
