He helped start a famous group called the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1848. This group included the artist Dante Gabriel Rossetti and the painter John Everett Millais. They wanted to change how people made art. They did not want to follow old styles from the Renaissance. Instead, they wanted to show the natural world with great truth. They looked at nature with a kind of devotion. This helped them make art that felt very real and alive.

To make his art, Hunt used a very special way of working. He focused on tiny details and used bright, vivid colors. He believed that every object in a painting could act as a sign. This means a single item might carry a deeper meaning. He wanted his paintings to show the link between a sign and a fact.

He studied things very closely to get them exactly right. This careful way of seeing helped him create very complex scenes.

Hunt was born in London in 1827. His father, William, worked as a warehouse manager. Interestingly, Hunt changed his name from Hobman to Holman. This happened because a clerk made a spelling mistake after his baptism.

He studied at the Royal Academy art schools after being rejected at first. He later traveled to the Holy Land to find real details for his work. He even built his own house in Jerusalem to be closer to the places he painted.

Many of his paintings are still very famous today. He painted scenes of everyday life, like "The Hireling Shepherd."

However, he is most well known for his religious paintings. One famous work is "The Light of the World," which he finished between 1851 and 1853. A later version of this painting is now in St Paul's Cathedral in London. He also painted "The Scapegoat" and "The Shadow of Death." Even when his eyesight began to fail, he finished large works with help from an assistant named Edward Robert Hughes.

We can still see the history of Hunt's life in many places. A blue plaque marks his old home in London to remember him.

His life has even been shown in BBC dramas like "Desperate Romantics." People who study art still look at his work to understand the Pre-Raphaelite style. He was even given the Order of Merit by King Edward VII in 1905. His life shows how much care and detail can go into a single painting.
