He is most well-known for his historical paintings that included nude figures. He was actually the first major British painter to focus on nudes and still lifes. While some people found his work controversial, he was a very respected artist. In 1828, he earned the title of Royal Academician. This was the highest honor an artist could receive at that time.

Etty learned his craft through hard work and practice.

He spent much time in a plaster-cast shop to practice drawing. This helped him learn how to draw classical sculptures very well. Later, he studied under the painter Thomas Lawrence. Lawrence let Etty use an attic room to copy his paintings. This was a frustrating way to learn, but it helped Etty master his skills. He became very good at painting realistic skin tones.

As a young boy, he showed talent by drawing in chalk on his father's shop floor. At age 11, he worked as an apprentice printer in Hull. This job was tiring, but it allowed him to read many books. In 1805, he moved to London with only a few colored crayons. He arrived in the big city to join the Royal Academy Schools. He stayed in London for most of his adult life.

In 1821, he painted *Cleopatra's Arrival in Cilicia*, which was a huge success. This painting featured many nude figures and brought him great fame. However, some people in the press criticized him for being indecent. To earn more money, he also painted portraits of people. He was also the first English painter to make significant still lifes.

These were paintings of objects like fruit and birds.

Even after he became famous, Etty never stopped learning. He continued to attend life classes throughout his entire life. This was unusual because other artists thought it was inappropriate. He also cared deeply about his home city of York. He helped start the city's first art school. He even helped a campaign to save the old city walls. He died in 1849, shortly after a large exhibition of his work.
