He painted people relaxing in fancy rooms made of marble. He also painted bright blue seas and sunny skies. Many people loved his work because it felt so real. His skill made the ancient past feel alive and grand.

To make his paintings look correct, Alma-Tadema worked with great care.

He studied books about ancient customs to learn every detail. He even met an Italian painter to learn about old wall paintings.

This helped him paint things like marble and granite very well. One teacher once joked his marble looked like cheese. Alma-Tadema took this to heart and practiced until his stone looked perfect. He became one of the best painters of stone in the world.

His journey as an artist began in the Netherlands.
