His paintings are famous for how they use light. He showed how light moves through a room. This made his work feel very real and special. People today consider him one of the greatest painters ever.

Vermeer worked with extreme care and very slowly. He did not make many paintings in his life. He often made only about three paintings each year.

He used very expensive pigments, which are the colorful powders used to make paint. To earn money, he also worked as an art dealer. This meant he bought and sold art for others. He was a respected craftsman in his city. He even served as the head of the Guild of Saint Luke. This was a professional group for artists.

Vermeer was born in October 1632. His father, Reijnier Janszoon, worked with silk and cotton. Reijnier also dealt in paintings and ran an inn.

Vermeer grew up in Delft and stayed there his whole life. In 1653, he married a woman named Catharina Bolnes. They had a very large family with 15 children. They lived in a house on Oude Langendijk. This house was near a hidden Jesuit church. Vermeer painted many of his works in a room on the second floor.

Life was often difficult for Vermeer and his family. In 1654, a huge explosion called the Delft Thunderclap hit his city.

Later, in 1672, a hard time called the Rampjaar occurred. This was a year of war and economic trouble for the Dutch Republic. French troops invaded from the south. Troops from Münster and Cologne also invaded from the east. Because of these wars, Vermeer could not sell his art. He died in December 1675 at the age of 43. His wife was left with many debts.

For a long time after he died, people forgot about Vermeer. He was not even mentioned in major books about Dutch art for almost two hundred years.
