Vermeer worked with extreme care and precision. He was a slow worker who produced very few paintings. It is estimated he produced only about three paintings per year. To afford his expensive pigments, he also worked as an art dealer. He bought and sold works by other masters. This dual role helped him support his large family. He was a respected professional in his community.

Vermeer's life was centered in the city of Delft. He was born there in October 1632. His father, Reijnier Janszoon, worked with silk and cotton. Reijnier also managed an inn and dealt in art. In 1653, Johannes married Catharina Bolnes. To marry her, he converted to Catholicism. The couple lived in a house on Oude Langendijk. This house sat near a hidden Jesuit church.

The family grew very large during their time in Delft. Catharina gave birth to 15 children. Ten of these children have names recorded in family wills. These names include Maertge, Elisabeth, and Ignatius. Vermeer painted many of his works in a second-floor room. He used the same furniture and decorations in many scenes. He often portrayed the same people, mostly women, in different arrangements.

Vermeer held important roles within the local art community. He joined the Guild of Saint Luke in 1653. This was a professional association for painters. He was elected head of the guild in 1662. He was also reelected in 1663, 1670, and 1671. These elections show he was an established craftsman. He likely gained his skills through connections or self-study. Some scholars suggest he may have been trained by Abraham Bloemaert.

Difficult times eventually impacted Vermeer's career and health. In 1672, a crisis called the Rampjaar struck the Dutch Republic. French troops invaded from the south. Troops from Münster and Cologne invaded from the east. This war caused a severe economic downturn. Vermeer could no longer sell his paintings. He died in December 1675 at age 43. His wife, Catharina, faced heavy debts after his death.

After his death, Vermeer fell into obscurity for nearly two centuries. He was omitted from many major surveys of Dutch art. In the 19th century, he was rediscovered by researchers. Gustav Friedrich Waagen and Théophile Thoré-Bürger were key figures. Thoré-Bürger called him "The Sphinx of Delft." He attributed 66 works to the artist. Today, 34 paintings are universally attributed to Vermeer.

His work reflects the religious and social life of Delft. The study of his paintings helps us understand the Dutch Golden Age. His reputation has grown from local fame to global recognition. He remains a symbol of technical perfection in painting.
