Unlike many of his peers, Rembrandt explored many different styles. He painted portraits, landscapes, and animal studies. He also created genre scenes and historical works. His art often blended earthly details with spiritual themes.

Rembrandt's creative process focused on capturing human emotion. He described his goal as achieving "the greatest and most natural movement."

This term, "beweegelijkheid," refers to the way he expressed motive or feeling. He used light and shadow to bring depth to his subjects. He was a master of various techniques. He used painting for large canvases. He used etching, which involves using acid on metal plates, for prints. He also used engraving and drypoint to create textures. These methods allowed him to share his vision with more people.

His early life began in Leiden, in the Dutch Republic.

He was born on July 15, 1606. His father was a miller and his mother was a baker's daughter. Rembrandt attended a Latin school as a boy. He briefly studied at the University of Leiden. However, he chose to pursue art instead. He apprenticed with Jacob van Swanenburg for three years. He also studied under the history painter Pieter Lastman for six months. By 1625, he opened his own studio in Leiden with Jan Lievens.

Rembrandt's career moved to Amsterdam in 1631.

This city was a major center for trade. He became a successful professional portraitist there. In 1634, he married Saskia van Uylenburgh. The couple lived in upscale neighborhoods like Breestraat. They purchased a house for 13,000 guilders. This large purchase later contributed to his financial troubles. During this time, he also taught many students, such as Ferdinand Bol and Govert Flinck. He became a member of the local guild of painters.

Despite his professional success, Rembrandt faced significant personal tragedy.

Three of his children died shortly after birth. His wife, Saskia, died in 1642, possibly from tuberculosis. He later had a relationship with Hendrickje Stoffels. These personal losses were reflected in his moving art. For example, he drew Saskia on her deathbed. He also faced legal and social challenges. He dealt with a breach of promise lawsuit from Geertje Dircx. He also faced scrutiny from the Reformed Church regarding his relationship with Hendrickje.

Financial instability defined much of his later life.

Rembrandt loved collecting rare items. He bought Old Master paintings, books, and even animal skins. He also collected items from Asia, like porcelain. This spending led to insolvency. In July 1656, he officially declared his insolvency. He had to sell many of his belongings. An auction in 1657 sold 363 items from his collection. This included drawings by artists like Raphael and Mantegna. Even so, he was allowed to keep his tools to continue working.

Rembrandt's legacy is seen in his incredible variety of work.

His 40 self-portraits serve as an intimate autobiography. They show how his style and appearance changed over time. His work connects to the broader history of the Dutch Golden Age. It shows the tension between religion and daily life. Even when he struggled with rent, he received important commissions. The Grand Duke of Tuscany even visited him twice. Rembrandt died on October 4, 1669. He was buried in the Westerkerk. His life remains a complex story of great skill and great hardship.
