Rembrandt was born on July 15, 1606, in Leiden. His father was a miller and his mother was a baker's daughter. As a boy, he went to a Latin school. He later studied art with a teacher named Jacob van Swanenburg. He also spent six months learning from Pieter Lastman in Amsterdam. In 1625, he opened his own studio in Leiden. He shared this space with his friend Jan Lievens. He began teaching students in 1627.
His career had many big changes and hard moments. 

Even during hard times, Rembrandt never stopped making art.

Rembrandt's creative process focused on capturing human emotion. He described his goal as achieving "the greatest and most natural movement." 
His early life began in Leiden, in the Dutch Republic. He was born on July 15, 1606. His father was a miller and his mother was a baker's daughter. Rembrandt attended a Latin school as a boy. He briefly studied at the University of Leiden. However, he chose to pursue art instead. He apprenticed with Jacob van Swanenburg for three years. He also studied under the history painter Pieter Lastman for six months. By 1625, he opened his own studio in Leiden with Jan Lievens.
Rembrandt's career moved to Amsterdam in 1631. 
Despite his professional success, Rembrandt faced significant personal tragedy. 
Financial instability defined much of his later life. Rembrandt loved collecting rare items. He bought Old Master paintings, books, and even animal skins. He also collected items from Asia, like porcelain. This spending led to insolvency. In July 1656, he officially declared his insolvency. He had to sell many of his belongings. An auction in 1657 sold 363 items from his collection. This included drawings by artists like Raphael and Mantegna. Even so, he was allowed to keep his tools to continue working. 
Rembrandt's legacy is seen in his incredible variety of work. His 40 self-portraits serve as an intimate autobiography. They show how his style and appearance changed over time. His work connects to the broader history of the Dutch Golden Age. It shows the tension between religion and daily life. Even when he struggled with rent, he received important commissions. The Grand Duke of Tuscany even visited him twice. Rembrandt died on October 4, 1669. He was buried in the Westerkerk. His life remains a complex story of great skill and great hardship.
