Freud had a very unique way of making his art. He often used a technique called impasto. This means he applied paint very thickly on the canvas. He used large brushes made of hog hair to do this. He would even clean his brush after every single stroke. This helped him create many different colors for the skin. He also liked to paint while standing up. As he got older, he used a high chair to work. He would start with a charcoal drawing first. Then, he would paint one small area and work outward.

Freud's career lasted for about 60 years. He was part of a group called the "School of London." This was a group of artists who all worked in London. They all painted in a figurative style. Other famous members included Francis Bacon and Frank Auerbach. Some of his paintings are very large. One painting of a woman named Ria took 2,400 hours to finish. The model had to pose for 16 months! He also spent 4,000 hours painting his mother. Many of his works are now in the Tate Gallery.

His paintings connect to how we see the world around us. He used light in two different ways. He had "day paintings" done in natural light. He also had "night paintings" done under artificial light. He never mixed these two types of lighting. He often included things like houseplants or even piles of rags in his work. He even painted views of London rooftops through his studio windows. His art was all about hope, memory, and how people feel. He knew his subjects very well through his long hours of watching them.
