Freud had a very special way of working. He used thick paint to show the texture of skin. This thick style is called impasto. He often used large brushes made of hog hair. He would even clean his brush after every stroke. This helped him make many different colors. He often painted while standing up.

His paintings took a long time to finish. He worked from life. This means the person sat in front of him. He would watch them for many months. One painting took about 2,400 hours to complete! He often started with a drawing in charcoal. He would then add paint to a small area. He worked outward from that spot. He felt a painting was done when it felt like someone else's work.
