His art often felt raw and unsettled to people who saw it. He liked to paint subjects in series, which means he painted them many times. He often used special formats called diptychs, which use two panels, or triptychs, which use three panels.

His work included portraits of popes, self-portraits, and even his close friends. Some of his paintings showed people inside strange geometric shapes. He is remembered as a painter who captured deep parts of being human.

Bacon had a specific way of working with his subjects. He would focus on one idea for a long time to show different versions of it. In the 1930s, he made shapes that looked like living things. During the 1940s, he painted heads inside rooms or shapes. In the 1950s, he became known for his "screaming popes." Later, in the 1960s, he painted many portraits of his friends. By the 1980s, his paintings became more technical and cool in style. He even made masterpieces like his 1982 study for a self-portrait.

Bacon was born on October 28, 1909, in Dublin, Ireland. At that time, Ireland was part of the United Kingdom. His father was an army captain and a racehorse trainer. His mother came from a family that owned a steel business.

As a child, Bacon was often sick with asthma. He also had an allergy to horses. Because he was often ill, he had lessons at home with a tutor. He attended a boarding school called Dean Close from 1924 to 1926. His early life involved moving between Ireland and England many times.

Bacon did not start painting seriously until he was in his late twenties. Before that, he worked as an interior decorator. He also spent time in cities like Berlin and Paris. In 1935, he bought a book about medical diseases. This book had pictures of open mouths that stayed in his mind.

These images helped shape the way he painted faces later on. His big breakthrough came in 1944 with a triptych called "Three Studies for Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion." This famous work helped make him a well-known artist.

His life and art were often linked to the people he knew. He spent much of his time in London's Soho area with friends. He liked eating, drinking, and gambling with people like Lucian Freud.

After his lover George Dyer died in 1971, his art became more serious. He began to think more about death and the passing of time. Today, his paintings are very valuable and famous. People all over the world seek out his work at art auctions. His reputation has grown steadily since he passed away in 1992.
