He was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, on January 4, 1838. Charles was a healthy baby who grew normally for six months. After that, he suddenly stopped growing. His doctor said he would likely never reach a normal height. Today, we call this condition pituitary dwarfism. Even though he was small, he was a very healthy child. He had several siblings who were of average size.

Charles became a star through the help of P. T. Barnum. Barnum was a famous circus pioneer who saw Charles's potential. He taught the boy how to sing, dance, and mime. Charles also learned to impersonate many famous people.

At age five, Charles began his first tour of America. He acted as characters like Cupid and Napoleon Bonaparte. Barnum gave him the name General Tom Thumb. This name came from a popular English fairy tale. His shows were a huge success with many people.

Charles traveled across the world to perform for many leaders. He went on a tour of Europe just one year after his first American tour. During this time, he became an international celebrity. He even appeared before Queen Victoria. He also met the future King Edward VII when the prince was only three years old. In 1845, he performed in a play called Le petit Poucet in France.

The ceremony was held at Grace Episcopal Church. At the wedding reception, the couple stood on top of a grand piano. They greeted about 10,000 guests that day. George Washington Morrison Nutt was the best man. Minnie Warren, Lavinia's sister, was the maid of honor. The couple even visited President Lincoln at the White House.

Charles became a very wealthy man during his life. He owned a house in New York and a steam yacht. He even owned a special home on the Thimble Islands in Connecticut. In 1883, Charles died unexpectedly from a stroke. He was 45 years old. More than 20,000 people attended his funeral. He is buried at Mountain Grove Cemetery in Bridgeport.
