He was a leader in a circus group called The Flying Wallendas. This group was made of daredevils. They performed many scary stunts very high above the ground. Often, they did not use a safety net to catch them. People loved to watch them show their great skill. This work was a way for the family to stay together. It was also a way to show the world what they could do.

Performing these stunts took a lot of practice and teamwork. The family was famous for riding bicycles on a high wire. They also built human pyramids. Karl had an idea for a special pyramid in 1938. He and his brother Hermann finally made it work in 1946. It was a three-tier pyramid with seven people. They needed the right acrobats to make it stay balanced. This pyramid became a very famous part of their shows.

Karl's life in the circus began when he was very young. He was born in 1905 in Magdeburg, Germany. His parents were named Kunigunde and Engelbert Wallenda. He started performing with his family at just six years old. In 1928, the family moved to the United States. They worked as freelancers to show their acts. This move helped them share their talents with many new people.

Karl performed some of his biggest feats in very large places.

In 1970, he walked across Tallulah Gorge in Georgia. The gap was a quarter-mile wide. About 30,000 people came to watch him. He even did two headstands while walking on the wire. In 1974, he broke a world record for distance at Kings Island. This record lasted until 2008 when his great-grandson, Nik Wallenda, broke it.

His work was very dangerous and led to many hard moments. In 1962, his adopted son Mario fell during a pyramid act. Mario was paralyzed from the waist down and died in 2015. In 1978, Karl died during a walk in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He was 73 years old at the time. High winds and a loose wire caused him to lose his balance. Today, his great-grandson Nik continues the family tradition. Some performers now use a safety harness to stay safe.
