He is known for walking on thin wires high above the ground. He was born in Nemours, France, in 1949. As a young boy, he loved magic and juggling. He also loved to climb. At age 16, he took his first steps on a tightrope. He taught himself many skills on the wire. He could ride a unicycle or a bicycle. He could also do front and backward somersaults. Petit wanted to create something new and special. He moved away from simple circus tricks to find his own style.

Petit is most famous for a walk between the Twin Towers in New York City.

This happened on August 7, 1974. He had planned this "coup" for six years. He first saw drawings of the towers in a magazine in 1968. To prepare, he studied the buildings very closely. He even rented a helicopter to take photos from the air. He worked with a team of several people. They used fake ID cards to get into the buildings. They pretended to be workers installing a fence on the roof.

Setting up the wire was a very hard job. The team had to carry heavy equipment to the rooftops. They used a bow and arrow to shoot a fishing line across the gap. That line helped them pull much larger ropes across. Finally, they could pull the heavy steel cable into place. Petit also used guy lines to keep the wire from swaying too much in the wind. On the morning of his walk, he stepped out onto the wire. He stayed up there for 45 minutes. He made eight passes along the line. During his walk, he danced and even lay down on the wire. He knelt to salute the people watching from the streets below.

Petit performed many other famous walks in his career. In 1971, he walked between the towers of Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. In 1973, he crossed the Sydney Harbour Bridge in Australia. He even walked an inclined wire at the Place du Trocadéro in France. His life has been shared through many different kinds of media. A documentary called *Man on Wire* won an Academy Award in 2009. There is also a film called *The Walk* from 2015. A children's book about him won a Caldecott Medal. These stories help people remember his amazing skill.

Today, Petit still shares his art with the world. He lives in New York and the Catskill Mountains. He is an artist-in-residence at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. He teaches workshops to help others learn his craft. Petit has also become good at many other things. He knows how to juggle, fence, and climb rocks. He can even do carpentry and equestrianism. He once built a barn using very old methods. His life shows how much work and planning goes into making something beautiful.
