White's path to professional greatness began in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He was raised by his mother until the age of eight. At that time, he moved to live with his grandmother, Mildred Dodd. He played high school football for the Howard High School Hustlin' Tigers. Under Coach Robert Pulliam, White became a standout player. During his senior year, he recorded 140 tackles and 10 sacks. This performance earned him All-American honors and the title of the top recruit in Tennessee. Even as a 12-year-old, White had decided he wanted to be both a football player and a minister.

He played college football for the Tennessee Volunteers from 1980 to 1983. His impact on the field was immediate and significant. During his freshman year, he earned the Andy Spiva Award for being the team's most improved defensive player. In his sophomore season, he led the team with eight sacks and seven tackles-for-loss. In 1987, he set an NFL record by averaging 1.75 sacks per game. He was the only player to record 20 or more sacks in only 12 games.

In 1993, White's career changed the landscape of professional sports. He became a free agent, which allowed him to choose his next team. This move pioneered the era of player-requested free agency in the NFL. He signed a four-year, $17 million contract with the Green Bay Packers. This made him the third highest-paid player in the NFL at the time. While playing for Green Bay, he added 68.5 more sacks to his total. He also helped the Packers win Super Bowl XXXI. In that championship game, he recorded three sacks, including a game-winning sack.
