Many experts consider him the greatest defensive player in the history of the National Football League (NFL). He was a disruptive force who fundamentally changed how football is played. His presence forced teams to invent new offensive formations and blocking schemes. He changed the way defensive pass rushing is organized across the entire league.

Taylor's playing style was defined by intense speed and overwhelming power. As an outside linebacker, he specialized in attacking the quarterback. He used a high-speed rush to bypass offensive lines. This often left quarterbacks with very little time to throw the ball. In 1986, he reached a career peak by recording 20.5 sacks. A sack occurs when a defensive player tackles the quarterback behind the line of scrimmage. During that same season, he was named the league's Most Valuable Player (MVP). He is one of only two defensive players in history to earn this specific honor.

His journey to professional stardom began with a unique path. Taylor grew up in Williamsburg, Virginia, as the first of three sons. Interestingly, he focused on baseball as a youth and played catcher. He did not start playing organized football until he was fifteen years old. He later attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1978 to 1981. At North Carolina, he transitioned from a defensive lineman to a linebacker in 1979. By his senior year, he set a team record with 16 sacks. He was also named a consensus first-team All-American and the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year.

The New York Giants selected Taylor with the second overall pick in the 1981 NFL draft.

Before the draft, 26 of the 28 NFL general managers stated they would pick him first if they had the chance. The Giants' general manager, George Young, believed Taylor was stronger and bigger than previous legends. Taylor's impact was immediate and statistically massive. In his rookie season, he won both the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year and the AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year awards. His arrival helped the Giants' defense significantly reduce the number of points they allowed per season.

Taylor was a central figure in some of the most famous defensive units in football history. He was a key part of the Giants' defense known as the "Big Blue Wrecking Crew." This unit led the team to victories in Super Bowls XXI and XXV.

He was also part of a linebacker group nicknamed the "Crunch Bunch." This group included players like Harry Carson, Carl Banks, and Pepper Johnson. Together, they earned a reputation as one of the most formidable defensive groups in the NFL.

Despite his athletic success, Taylor's life included significant personal struggles and legal issues. He admitted to using drugs, specifically cocaine, during his early years in the NFL. In 1988, the league suspended him for 30 days after he failed a drug test. His struggles with substance abuse continued after he retired from professional football. He was jailed three times for attempted drug possession. Taylor later claimed to have lived a sober, drug-free life between 1998 and 2009. In 2010, his personal life faced further scrutiny following an arrest for sexual misconduct. He eventually pleaded guilty to charges involving sexual misconduct and was registered as a low-risk sex offender.

After his football career ended, Taylor attempted several different professional paths. He worked as a color commentator, which involves providing expert analysis during sporting events. He also pursued a career as an actor. His legacy remains a complex mix of unparalleled athletic dominance and significant personal controversy. He remains a benchmark for defensive excellence in the sport of football.
