Paterno's journey into coaching began through a series of unexpected steps. He was born in Brooklyn, New York, on December 21, 1926. After graduating from Brooklyn Preparatory School, he served in the United States Army during World War II. He later attended Brown University as an English literature major. At Brown, he played football as both a quarterback and a cornerback. He actually intended to attend Boston University School of Law. However, he was persuaded by his former coach, Rip Engle, to join Penn State as an assistant coach in 1950. He eventually succeeded Engle as head coach in 1966.

During his long career, Paterno achieved several major milestones in football. He led the Nittany Lions to two national championships in 1982 and 1986. He also coached five different teams to undefeated seasons. His teams participated in 37 bowl games, which are post-season contests. Out of these appearances, he secured 24 wins. He was the first coach to win each of the four major bowls. These include the Rose, Orange, Fiesta, and Sugar Bowls, plus the Cotton Bowl Classic. In 2007, he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.

The scale of Penn State football grew significantly under his leadership. As the team's success increased, the stadium, Beaver Stadium, underwent massive expansion. In 1966, the stadium held 46,284 spectators. By 2001, the capacity had grown to 106,572 people. Paterno also coached legendary players, such as Heisman Trophy winner John Cappelletti in 1973. He spent 62 seasons on the Penn State coaching staff. This set a record for the most seasons served by any coach at a single university.

Paterno's career ended abruptly due to the Penn State child sex abuse scandal. This scandal involved former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky, who was arrested in 2011. An investigation led by former FBI director Louis Freeh concluded that Paterno had concealed information regarding Sandusky's abuse of a young boy. Consequently, the Penn State Board of Trustees terminated Paterno's contract on November 9, 2011. This event caused a massive shift in how the university and the NCAA handled such matters. Paterno died 74 days later from complications related to lung cancer.

The aftermath of the scandal led to significant legal and athletic disputes. In 2012, the NCAA vacated all of Penn State's wins from 1998 through 2011. This was intended as a punishment for the university. However, legal challenges followed this decision. State Senator Jake Corman argued that the Freeh report and the NCAA had not followed due process. He released emails suggesting that NCAA officials and investigators had collaborated closely. Eventually, a 2015 legal settlement resulted in the NCAA restoring 111 wins to Paterno's record.

Today, Paterno's legacy remains a complex subject in sports history. While he was once celebrated with awards like the Amos Alonzo Stagg Award, many honors were later revoked. For example, the NCAA Gerald R. Ford Award was taken away following the scandal. The Big Ten Conference also changed the name of the Stagg–Paterno Championship Trophy to the Stagg Championship Trophy. His life represents both incredible athletic achievement and a period of profound institutional crisis. The discussions surrounding his career continue to impact college athletics and university governance.
