Rice's legendary work ethic began during his childhood in Mississippi. His father, Joe, was a brick mason who built houses by hand. As a young boy, Rice helped his father by catching bricks on top of scaffolds. This task ensured his father had materials ready to lay. Rice also helped his family by picking crops like corn, cotton, and hay. These early experiences taught him the meaning of hard work. Even when his family struggled financially, Rice remained determined. This discipline prepared him for the rigors of professional sports.

His path to stardom began at Mississippi Valley State University.

He played for the Delta Devils under coach Archie Cooley. Cooley ran a pass-heavy offense that used four wide receivers at once. Rice and quarterback Willie Totten formed a duo called "The Satellite Express." During his college career, Rice broke 18 NCAA records. In 1984, he set a record with 27 touchdown receptions in one season. He finished his college career with 301 catches and 4,693 yards. The university later named its stadium Rice–Totten Stadium to honor these players.

In 1985, Rice entered the NFL as the 16th overall pick.

He joined the San Francisco 49ers after coach Bill Walsh saw his highlights. Rice developed incredible connections with legendary quarterbacks Joe Montana and Steve Young. These partnerships helped him lead the league in receiving yards and touchdowns six times. He also led the league in receptions twice. In 1987, he set a record with 22 receiving touchdowns in a twelve-game season. His play helped the 49ers win three Super Bowl titles in 1988, 1989, and 1994.

Rice's career included several distinct stages and transitions. After his long tenure in San Francisco, he faced a knee injury. The 49ers released him in June 2001. He then signed with the Oakland Raiders for four years. During this time, he helped the Raiders reach Super Bowl XXXVII. This loss was the only time his Super Bowl record was not perfect. In 2004, he was traded to the Seattle Seahawks for his final season. He briefly signed with the Denver Broncos before retiring in 2005. Despite these changes, he remained a productive starter throughout his long career.

Rice's statistical achievements are staggering and define his legacy.
