He played the position of quarterback for 17 seasons in the National Football League (NFL). Most of his career was spent playing for the Miami Dolphins. Marino is famous for his powerful arm and his quick release when throwing. These skills allowed him to lead his team to the playoffs ten times. Even though he never won a Super Bowl, he is considered one of the greatest quarterbacks ever. He holds the record for the most career victories by a quarterback who never won a title, with 155 wins.

Being a professional quarterback requires immense precision and physical strength. A quarterback must throw the ball accurately to teammates while under pressure from the opposing team. Marino mastered this by using a quick release to get the ball away fast. This prevented defenders from hitting him or blocking the pass. In 1984, his skill reached a peak that few have ever matched. He became the first quarterback to reach 5,000 passing yards in a single season. That year, he also threw 48 touchdown passes, which was a single-season record at the time.

Marino's career can be divided into several distinct and successful stages. His early years began at the University of Pittsburgh, where he played for the Panthers from 1979 to 1982. During this time, he led the team to many wins and earned All-American honors. After college, he entered the NFL through the 1983 draft. His professional career was defined by his dominant years in the mid-1980s with the Dolphins. He was a nine-time Pro Bowl selection during his time in the league. He also earned several All-Pro honors, which recognize the best players at each position.

His journey to the pros was not a simple path. In the 1983 NFL draft, Marino's status dropped due to a weak senior year and other rumors. Five other quarterbacks were selected in the first round before him. This included future stars like Jim Kelly and John Elway. Marino was the 27th pick, the last quarterback taken in that first round. The Miami Dolphins selected him, and he was surprised to be available. His coach, Don Shula, noted that being passed over motivated Marino to prove the other teams wrong.

Marino's statistical achievements are staggering when looking at the specific numbers. By the time he retired, he had accumulated 61,361 career passing yards. He also completed 4,967 passes and attempted 8,358 throughout his career. He threw a total of 420 touchdown passes, making him the first to reach the 400 mark. In 1986, he reached his 100th touchdown pass in only 44 games. This was the fastest any player had ever reached that milestone. His career passer rating of 86.4 was one of the highest in the history of the league.

Throughout his career, Marino achieved many notable and surprising feats. In 1984, he recorded nine games with 300 passing yards and four games with 400 yards. He was the first quarterback to lead the league in completions, yards, and touchdowns in three consecutive seasons. He also reached major milestones like 50,000 and 60,000 career passing yards. Even when the team struggled, like in 1988, he still threw for over 4,400 yards. His ability to maintain high performance over many years is a testament to his skill.

He is also in the College Football Hall of Fame and the Miami Dolphins Honor Roll. In 2019, a panel of coaches and media members named him to the NFL 100th Anniversary All-Time Team. This list includes only the 10 greatest quarterbacks in the first 100 years of the NFL. His jersey number is one of only three retired by the Miami Dolphins.
