Marino's journey started long before he reached the professional leagues. He grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He played college football for the University of Pittsburgh Panthers from 1979 to 1982. His college years were very successful for both him and his team. In 1981, he earned first-team All-American honors. One of his favorite moments was in the 1982 Sugar Bowl. He threw a game-winning pass to tight end John Brown with less than a minute left. This helped his team win against the Georgia Bulldogs.

His path to the NFL was not always easy. In the 1983 NFL draft, many teams passed on him. He was the last quarterback chosen in the first round. The Miami Dolphins chose him with the 27th pick. He did not expect to be picked that late. This moment actually motivated him to work even harder.
