To be a great running back, you must be fast and very strong. Smith worked hard to master this role from a young age. He started playing organized football at age eight with the Salvation Army. Later, he played for Escambia High School in Pensacola, Florida. He was so good that he rushed for 8,804 yards in high school. He also ran track as a sprinter for the Escambia Gators. This helped him become the 1986 national high school player of the year.

However, he proved them wrong very quickly in the fall of 1987. In his first college start, he broke a 57-year-old school record. He rushed for 224 yards against Alabama at Legion Field. By the end of his junior year, he held 58 school records. He was even named the SEC Player of the Year in 1989.

In 1990, the Dallas Cowboys selected Smith with the 17th pick in the NFL draft. He had an amazing first year and won the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award. Throughout his long career, he reached many huge milestones. He rushed for a total of 18,355 yards. This made him the all-time leading rusher in the NFL. He also holds the record for the most career rushing touchdowns with 164. In 1993, he achieved something no other running back had done. He won the league MVP and the Super Bowl MVP in the same season.
