A running back is a player who carries the ball through the defense. Sanders was famous for being elusive, which means he was very hard to catch. He used quickness and agility to move past opponents. He stood 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighed about 200 pounds. Many people thought he was too small for the professional game. However, his skill proved that size is not everything on the field.

His path to greatness began with hard work and many different roles. In high school, he played defensive back and basketball. He even played wingback, a position similar to a wide receiver. He did not become a starting running back until his senior year. In that season, he rushed for 1,417 yards and 17 touchdowns. He then went to Oklahoma State University to play for the Cowboys.

He played for the Lions for ten seasons. During his career, he won the NFL Offensive Player of the Year award twice. In 1997, he was named the Most Valuable Player. He helped the Lions reach the postseason in 1991. Sanders finished with 15,269 rushing yards. This total is the fourth most in the history of the league.

Sanders' career shows how talent and speed can change a game. He averaged nearly 100 rushing yards every single game. Even though he retired unexpectedly in 1999, his impact lasted a long time. The Lions retired his number 20 jersey in 2004. He was also inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Today, many fans and experts still rank him as the best ever.
