To succeed, a decathlete must be able to run fast, jump high, and throw heavy objects with great strength. Eaton did not just compete; he became one of the greatest to ever play. He is famous for breaking the 9,000-point barrier in the decathlon. In fact, he is the only person to ever score over 9,000 points twice. His highest score was 9,045 points, which he achieved on August 29, 2015.

Being a decathlete requires a very specific way of training. An athlete must prepare for many different movements, from sprinting to jumping.

Eaton worked on his speed in the 100-meter dash and the 400-meter run. He also practiced jumping in the long jump and the high jump. For throwing, he had to master the shot put, the discus, and the javelin. He even had to learn the pole vault, which uses a long, flexible pole to jump over a bar. This variety of skills means an athlete must be both very strong and very fast.

Eaton's journey began in Oregon, where he grew up being very active.

As a young child, he played football, basketball, soccer, and even earned a black belt in taekwondo. He attended Mountain View High School in Bend, Oregon. Later, he went to the University of Oregon to compete as a Duck. While in college, he won the prestigious Bowerman award in 2010. He was a five-time NCAA champion and became the first male athlete to win three straight decathlon titles. His coaches at Oregon helped him improve his skills in many difficult events.

His career was filled with amazing numbers and historic wins. In 2012, Eaton won the gold medal at the Summer Olympics in London. He did this after breaking the world record at the Olympic Trials.

He defended his title by winning another gold medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics. This made him only the third person ever to win back-to-back Olympic gold medals in the decathlon. He also held the world record for the heptathlon, which is an indoor contest with seven events. He set a new record for that event in Istanbul, Turkey, in 2012.

Eaton's life shows how much hard work can lead to greatness. He competed for the Oregon Track Club Elite team based in Eugene, Oregon. Even though he was a superstar, he always pushed himself to do better. For example, he broke his own world records multiple times. He officially announced his retirement from professional sports on January 3, 2017. Today, people remember him as a man who could do almost anything on a track. His many medals and records show what is possible when you practice many different skills.
