She was born in Sheffield on 28 January 1986. She became a champion in the heptathlon and the 100 metres hurdles. The heptathlon is a special competition with seven different events. She also won three world championships in 2009, 2011, and 2015.

Her journey into sports started when she was a young girl. Her parents helped her find her way into athletics. Her father, Vinnie, was a painter from Jamaica. Her mother, Alison, is a social worker from Derbyshire. They took her to a track event at Don Valley Stadium in 1996. There, she won her very first prize, which was a pair of trainers. She met her coach, Toni Minichiello, at that event.

Jessica worked very hard to reach the top levels. She studied psychology at the University of Sheffield and graduated in 2007. Even while training, she completed her A-Levels and GCSEs. She competed in many places like Italy, Australia, and Canada. In 2005, she won the European Athletics Junior Championships in Lithuania. This was a big moment because she was the first Briton to win that title. She also set a British junior record during that competition.

Being a top athlete can involve hard times and injuries. In 2008, Jessica suffered from stress fractures in her right foot. This was a very difficult setback for her. Because of this injury, she could not compete in the Beijing Olympic Games. She had to spend twelve months resting and recovering. When she returned, she even had to change her technique. She had to use her left leg to jump in the long jump.

Today, Jessica is a celebrated figure in her home city.

Sheffield has many ways to show how much they value her. There is a gold post box named after her in Barker's Pool. There is also a stand named for her at Bramall Lane. Since retiring, she works as a commentator for the BBC. She also creates fitness apps to help women with training and health.
