He spent his entire 16-year professional career playing for the Denver Broncos. As a quarterback, he was a "dual-threat" player. This means he was great at both passing the ball and running with it. He was even one of only two players to score a rushing touchdown in four different Super Bowls. Elway's skill helped him become a legend in the National Football League. He even served as a manager for the Broncos after he stopped playing.

Elway's journey began with a very busy childhood. He was born on June 28, 1960, in Port Angeles, Washington.

His father, Jack Elway, was a football coach. Because of his father's job, the family moved to many places. They lived in Montana and Washington. Eventually, they moved to the San Fernando Valley in California. There, Elway played high school football at Granada Hills High School. He was a star there, even while dealing with a knee injury. He was so talented that he was also drafted to play baseball.

In college, Elway played for the Stanford Cardinal. He was a great athlete in both football and baseball at Stanford.

During football practice, his throws were so strong they became famous. Players called it the "Elway cross." This happened because the ball's seams left marks on the players' chests. He set many records for passing at Stanford. He also finished second in the voting for the Heisman Trophy. One famous game, called "The Play," was a very tough loss for his team. Even so, he finished his college career with many honors.

Elway's move to the professional league was quite dramatic. He was the first pick in the 1983 NFL draft.

The Baltimore Colts picked him first. However, Elway did not want to play for them. He preferred to play on the West Coast. This led to a big trade that sent him to the Denver Broncos. In 1987, he led a famous 98-yard drive called "The Drive." This moment is still remembered as one of the best in sports history. He later won two Super Bowl titles as a player.

Elway's impact on the Denver Broncos lasted for many years. He won his first championship in Super Bowl XXXII. The very next year, he won again in Super Bowl XXXIII. He was named the most valuable player for that second big win. After retiring in 1999, he stayed with the team in the front office. He worked as a general manager and an executive. Under his leadership, the Broncos won even more titles, including Super Bowl 50. He is now honored in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
