He is remembered as one of the greatest players ever. People see him as the model for modern star quarterbacks. His skill helped make professional football very popular with fans.

Being a quarterback requires great skill and leadership. Unitas was known for his ability to lead fourth quarter comebacks. This means he helped his team win games late in the match. He also helped develop the "hurry-up offense." This is a fast way to play the game. He was famous for his "jump pass" in high school. This special throw could travel 60 yards through the air. He even once threw a left-handed pass between his legs.

His journey to the pros was quite difficult. He was born in Pittsburgh in 1933 during the Great Depression. His father died when Johnny was only five years old. He later tried out for Notre Dame, but they said he was too skinny. He played college football for the University of Louisville. After college, he worked in construction to help his family. He even played for a local team for only six dollars a game. Eventually, he borrowed money for gas to attend a Colts tryout.
