He used clever hands and a changing pace to stay open. This made him very hard to guard. He was often able to break free from the best defenders. He even became the first player to reach 1,000 receiving yards in a single season.

His journey started long before he joined the professional league. He was born in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, in 1913. As a boy, he was a Boy Scout who played with snakes. He said this helped him learn to be agile. In high school, he was a great basketball player. He later played college football for the Alabama Crimson Tide. From 1932 to 1934, he played as an end for Alabama. He was so good that he earned many All-American honors.

Hutson's professional career was full of amazing numbers. He joined the Green Bay Packers in 1935. He played 11 seasons before retiring in 1945. He led the league in receiving touchdowns in nine different seasons. He also led the league in receiving yards seven times. In 1942, he caught 74 passes for 1,211 yards.
